Matt Lauer May Lose His New Zealand Farm Because He's An Asshole

New Zealand’s overseas investment regulator said on Thursday it was discussing allegations made against former U.S. “Today” show host Matt Lauer with his representative as part of a review of his purchase of a large South Island farm. NBC News fired Lauer on Wednesday after a female colleague accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior, the network said, making him the latest rich and powerful man to be felled by such accusations.

New Zealand’s Overseas Investment Office cited the requirement that foreign investors needed to be “of good character” as it confirmed it was seeking further information on Lauer.

The regulator has the power to enforce the sale of property if it determines that the “good character” requirement is not met.

Full story here.

So as many have seen, Matt Lauer was fired from NBC after allegations of sexual assault were raised against him. To that end, I say goodbye and good riddance! But that’s not all. It looks like Matt Lauer might lose his land in New Zealand! Wealthy investors coming in and buying up a ton of land has been an issue for the island nation, and so the government has tried to be pickier about who can buy land by factoring in the potential buyer’s character. So yes, basically, Matt Lauer may lose his massive sheep farm in New Zealand because he’s a bad person.

I fucking love this. We should do this everywhere, but not just to foreign people- let’s just start with super rich people. Oh you want to retire on a big ranch and buy up all the land from the little folk? Well sorry ya can’t, because you’re a shitty person! Want to combat the formation (or existence) of a plutocracy? Hey, just don’t sell anybody shit if they’re a bad person, no matter how rich they are!

I know I know I know, the problems go much deeper than who owns land. And even if you did own land, would you have enough money to maintain it or would you just have to sell it back to the rich people? I get it, it’s a complicated issue. You know what’s not complicated? Not giving nice things to people who aren’t nice. Yeah, that would be a great start.
