Old Woman Mistakenly Declared Dead
Government records may show she's legally dead, but 89-year-old Carmen Gonzalez proved she was alive and well on Tuesday.
But the situation is proving to be anything but funny for Gonzalez, as the error has been causing her major problems for the past few months -- from not receiving Social Security checks to having her health insurance cut off.
Gonzalez's ordeal began back in October, when she abruptly stopped receiving her monthly Social Security checks and instead began getting letters explaining that her benefits had been cut because someone had reported her deceased.
The family is still trying to pinpoint where the mix-up occurred. The Social Security office determined that she had died on Oct. 5 of last year, which was the same day Gonzalez was discharged from York Healthcare and Wellness Centre in Highland Park.
But in a statement to KTLA, the care facility denied having anything to do with the error.

This is not a great look for anybody!
Very tough look for the government who thought this lady was dead.
Very tough look for the retirement home that in all likelihood told the government that this lady was dead.
Lastly, very tough look for the old lady who everybody told everybody else was dead. I mean, sure it’s better to be alive than dead; but having everybody think you might as well be dead when you’re still alive has got to be a huge bummer. That can’t feel good. If everyone thought I was dead it would be cool for like two hours, but then eventually I’m sure it would get old. You have to deal with the fact that the government doesn’t send you mail anymore, and also the fact, well, everybody thinks you’re dead. Also, it’s probably a lot more fun to have the government think you’re dead when you’re 26 and not an old person who relies on government packages to stay alive.
It also shouldn’t be this easy for a person to be dead! There’s got to be more! It can’t just come down to one miscommunication, right? Sure I understand that maybe my address will get fucked up because of a misprint in my name, but I shouldn’t be declared dead for the same reason. This is not one of those things that you should just take someone’s word for. No, you’ve gotta at least double check! You can’t just say people are dead when they’re not and expect to get away with it. I respect the government office job grind enough to know that a few letters get mixed up every once in a while, but this crosses the line.
P.S. It’s so obvious that the nursing home fucked this up. Someone checked “deceased” instead of “moved out” and that was that. To be fair, I didn’t know you were even allowed to move out of nursing homes. I thought there was only one way out.
