Sorority House Battle Between Girl With Service Dog and Girl With Dog Allergy Goes To Court
(CNN) One sorority sister uses a service dog to control her panic attacks. Another suffers from dog allergies that exacerbate other medical conditions. Both live in the Chi Omega sorority house at The Ohio State University. Now a judge has to decide who gets to stay and who has to go.
At the start of the school year, Entine and Cory moved into the Chi Omega house. Just a few weeks later, another sister in the house began complaining about Cory, saying she was allergic to dogs.
Freshman and sophomore students are required to live either on-campus or in Greek housing. Since she's the Chi Omega chapter vice president, she lives in her sorority house.
Court documents say Cory exacerbates the other sister's "allergies and asthma, which, in turn, causes a flare-up of Housemate's Crohn's disease." According to court filings, the dog is regularly played with by others throughout the house.
I mean if you’re the sorority sister with the allergy, you better pray that you get kicked out. Because if you’re the one who stays, you will never live that down. You will never not be the person who got the person with the service dog kicked out of the sorority. I, of all people, understand that at this moment the blood’s really flowing and all you want is to put this one in the win column; but you really need to trust me on this one. This is a classic “hindsight is 20/20” moment, and a real opportunity to avoid a situation where in twenty years you look back and think, “wow I was an asshole”.
Look, if you’re the girl with the service dog, you’re used to being the villain. It sucks but you are! You’re always the person who’s bringing your dog where dogs aren’t allowed. That’s not to say you’re doing anything wrong, it’s just that you make more people unhappy because of your condition than girl #2 makes unhappy because of her allergies. This is something she’ll have to deal with for the foreseeable future while she’s suffering from these level of panic attacks, and let me tell you: there will always be a girl with a pain-in-the-ass allergy. That’s to say that if you surrender in this battle, you’ll just end up fighting it again with someone else. We, as a society, are the most spineless and babied people. It’s insane. There’s always going to be a complainer.
And I will say this: for the most part, allergies are pathetic. I mean if you’re deathly allergic to something, then I apologize. If you break out in hives and you have trouble breathing, then, yes, I also apologize. But I will unapologetically say that if Claritin cures your allergy then just take some fucking Claritin. The fact that this is going to court is insane. The girl needs a service dog. The fact that she needs a service dog shouldn’t prevent her from doing any of the things that anybody else does. If you have an allergy, you can either suck it up or get out! It’s like any other situation. The person with the more serious medical condition wins. And this girl needing a dog to sit on her chest while she has a panic attack beats your stuffy nose and “Crohns disease”.
I mean, if neither of you want to leave just get creative. I don’t know, make the dog wear a plastic bag as a coat. Make everyone vacuum themselves when moving from room to room. Hold your breath when you go the bathroom. I don’t know. It’s college; your dog allergies/Crohn disease is the best possible flare up you could have.
P.S. I don’t know what Crohns disease is but I guarantee I’ll research it tomorrow and feel terrible about everything I just wrote.
