Stephen Curry To Teach Online Basketball Class
Stephen Curry list of accolades on the court includes a pair of Kia MVP, a pair of NBA championships, multiple All-Star appearances and many more. Off the court, he's looking to add to his list of accomplishments, too, as he will soon be serving as a professor of sorts. In an interview with ESPN.com's Chris Haynes, Curry said he will be partnering with MasterClass.com to teach, via video, classes on basketball fundamentals including shooting, using ball screens, finishing on either side of the rim and more.
(Curry also points out in the interview that there will be "no dunking chapter".)
The class is geared toward beginners and intermediates, Haynes reports, and Curry is seeking to help players advance with the overall acceleration of their games. Curry also wants to help players understand the maturation process needed in shooting a lot of his specialty -- 3-point shots.
So many of these online teaching courses have been popping up recently. You can learn how to act, become a screenwriter, cook a soufflé, find your inner chi, and I don’t even know what else. I’ve actually heard that they’re great, and I do think that especially after you’ve graduated from college that it suddenly becomes so much harder to find instruction in areas you care about.
For whatever reason, the Steph Curry one seems a little bit ridiculous to me. Like, I’m sorry, but no number of jump shots is going to make you Steph Curry. That’s not to say that any of the other industries included in these videos are easy. I just think that being a professional athlete requires certain physical attributes in addition to the usual hard work. I understand that Steph Curry isn’t necessarily the most physically gifted of all NBA athletes, by which I mean he’s not the tallest or the fastest; but he’s got amazing fundamentals, is super clever and inventive on the court, and obviously can shoot the shit out of the ball. Which basically says: he's far more physically gifted than you.
How many people are going to make the NBA or play Division I ball because of these videos? I understand that they’re not exclusively for those with professional aspirations, but if you’re going to spend this amount of money on it- you better have them. I could go on and on about this, but I just think it’s a waste. I mean all it’s going to do is start a revolution of middle age guys who are suddenly going to start popping off threes like they’re Steph Curry. It means that the guy in my Saturday league who usually launches ridiculous threes is going to be more confident launching ridiculous threes, and that’s confidence he doesn’t need.
P.S. Is this the dumbest thing I’ve ever been negative about? Yeah, probably.
