Minnesota Narrowly Wins 5 On 3 Basketball Game: Doesn't Have To Destroy Program

If you missed it over the weekend, we had a classic three on five college basketball game! No. 25 Alabama played with just three men for the final 10 minutes against No. 14 Minnesota after the Crimson Tide lost its entire bench to ejections, another player to a foul out and another player to an injury. Bama still nearly pulled off the upset win, before eventually losing, 89-84. (full article here)

Now I’m a couple days late on this because at this point I’m a strictly 9-5 blogger, so I won’t get too into the play by play of the game. Basically Alabama’s entire bench got ejected early in the second half for leaving the designated bench area during a brawl. One foul-out and an injury later, Alabama only had three guys who were eligible to play. It helps that one of those guys was Collin Sexton, and while Alabama lost 89-84 they actually ended up outscoring Minnesota 30-22 over last ten minutes of play. So all in all, they put up a hell of a fight.

Which brings me to my big point: if you’re on Minnesota do you have to quit basketball? Like come on guys, you almost lost a 3 on 5 game. That’s pathetic. And while as close as I am to calling for the resignation of all Minnesota players and coaching staff,  they won so I can’t do it.

Mostly though this just comes down to a lose-lose situation for Minnesota. You win a game of 3 on 5? Good for you, cowards! Way to beat up on the little guy! You lose a game of 3 on 5? Well, then yes, you must quit basketball. I’m sorry, but any aspirations of NBA ball or championships go right out the window. It’s unfortunate. It’s harsh. But there’s no room for people who lose shorthanded in basketball, there just isn’t. So congratulations Minnesota, you live another day. You’ll always be the guys who almost lost to three players; but it’s better than being the guys who scrape barnacles off of boats for a living because you didn't practice enough 5 on 3 offense.

P.S. For the record, there’s nothing wrong with scraping barnacles off of boats for a living.
