McDonald's is going vegan.

The fast food chain plans to start selling a McVegan burger in hundreds of restaurants across Sweden and Finland starting on December 28.

The sandwich, which has already been tested at a handful of McDonald's locations in Finland, consists of a soy patty, bun, tomato, lettuce, pickles, onion, ketchup, mustard, oil and an egg-less sandwich sauce.

Full story here.

So McDonald’s is going vegan, and I actually think they can pull it off. You know at first I was little taken aback. I’ll miss the days where McDonald’s was my thing and my vegan friends couldn’t have any, but it’s 2017, and it’s time to change. I think it’s going to be a pretty successful move!

Think about the challenges of making a good vegan burger. First and foremost, the difficulty lies in making ingredients that don’t taste like meat- taste like meat. It’s hard to make lentils, quinoa and black beans simulate a juicy, medium-rare burger, that’s a fact. Consider, however, that McDonald’s burgers don’t really taste like meat! Don’t get me wrong, I’ll house a McDouble as fast as anybody, but we’re not talking Kobe beef here. I’m not lauding McDonald’s for how juicy their shit is, I’m lauding McDonald’s for how much salt they put in their food!

When it comes down to it, the bar’s set pretty low. I’m not totally convinced that there’s real beef in McDonald’s patties anyway, so I don’t know how big of a stretch this will even be for the human taste bud. Also, worst case scenario they just drown this thing in vegan special sauce and nobody will notice a thing! Watch out, McDonald's about to release the next big vegan thing since sliced vegan bread, and it will probably have more calories than a big mac.

P.S. The real reason this is okay is because McDonald’s is bringing back the dollar menu, if that wasn’t the case I’d be afraid they were getting soft on us.
