This Week In "Was That Your Best Effort?" Family Adopts Rescue Pig: Gets Overwhelmed: Eats It
British Columbia, Canada —
According to GlobalNews.ca, a 3-year-old Vietnamese potbellied pig named Molly was killed and eaten by her adoptive family.
When Molly was first dropped at BC SPCA’s Cowichan & District Branch's shelter, she was emaciated and scared. She was nursed back to health by shelter staff and volunteers, and then adopted out to a local family to live out the rest of her days being loved.
Sadly, that's not what happened. Molly's new family decided to kill and eat her because they "did not know how to properly take care of her."

Okay hold the fuck on for a moment. These folks got overwhelmed with taking care of their pig and so they killed and ate it. I see how this could be an issue, given that the pig had been rescued and well, kept from being eaten for so long. As we’ve gone over before, nothing really kicks you in the nuts more than having something you love, like your stickers, or your horse, get eaten in front of your eyes. Not great. These folks should have been ready for the inevitable shit storm that comes with eating an animal you rescued. It’s like eating a kid is bad, but it’s especially bad eating a kid you adopted.
My biggest issue with this doesn’t really have all that much to do with the fact this family decided to turn Bertha into bacon: it’s with the ridiculous logic that apparently went into this decision. You were overwhelmed by taking care of a pig so that you ate it? Alright how hard is it to take care of a pig? Let's get serious. They live outside, they eat literally anything, and my impression is you don’t have to wash them. Seems pretty simple to me. You know what sounds like would be overwhelming? Murdering your pet, or just killing an animal in general. That sounds overwhelming to me. Imagine that conversation, “Hey kids, turns out this is much harder than having a dog so we’re gonna eat it.” You’re not just going to introduce the kids to the new family addition only to cap it behind the shed after a week. Just absolutely bonkers. No fucking way this family had ANY intention of hanging on to this pig for any longer than they needed it to marinate.
P.S. If you don’t want a pig to get eaten then you can’t name it a potbellied pig. That name just drips barbecue.
P.P.S. Speaking of overwhelming pigs though: I laugh every time I remember that teacup pigs are just baby piglets. Like, they grow up to become normal pigs. I can’t think of anything more hilarious than some poor family watching their pet teacup pig grow bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and bigger, until it’s become abundantly clear that they’ve been had- and that the daughter who was beyond psyched that she got to take care of a hamster-sized pig realizes that she's now in charge of a farm animal.
