Not A Nice Blog: Amy Schumer Has Lyme Disease And This Is A Terrible Time To Reveal You Have Lyme Disease

Amy Schumer says she is undergoing treatment for Lyme disease.

Schumer made the announcement on her Instagram, writing: "Anyone get LYME this summer? I got it and I'm on doxycycline. I have maybe had it for years. Any advice? Can you have a glass of wine or 2 on it? I know to stay out of the sun. I'm also taking these herbs from cape cod called lyme-2. Please comment or text me on my number in my bio. I also want to say that I feel good and am excited to get rid of it."

Lyme disease is an infection caused by bacteria commonly carried by ticks. Roughly 300,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I want to be clear that Lyme disease sounds like it SUCKS. Being an adult already sucks and is tiring as fuck, so I can’t imagine having to do any of the shit we have to with something that actually afflicts you with fatigue. Plus, you get it from ticks, and those things are the absolute pits. At the end of the day, I love most of Amy Schumer’s stuff (not that it matters whether I do or not), but it’s gotta be tough to have something that’s so difficult that you’re reaching out on social media for fans’ advice. Seriously, that’s gotta be hard.

All this being said, I can’t think of a worst time to reveal that you have Lyme disease, because nobody cares. It has very little to do with Amy Schumer. It’s just nobody cares about Lyme disease. Wrongly, very few people really cared about it before, and let me tell you NOBODY cares about it now. We’re in the middle of a pandemic, and we just lost Chadwick to cancer. Those alone, regardless of THE ONE MILLION other things that are pointing to this being the end of days, is enough for anyone to tune out anything having to do with Lyme disease. 

If you and I are working together, and you have a bad cold. I’ll likely feel pretty bad for you, because at the end of the day having cold sucks. If you have a bad cold, and everybody in my apartment is vomiting blood from the flu, I’m probably not going to give a shit about you. It’s not your fault, it’s just bad timing and we’ve already been hurt so bad. 

Obviously it’s Amy Schumer’s right to share the news, and ask for the help she needs, but good god I can’t think of a worst time to expect pity for this. I feel like I could be meaner about this, but I don’t want to be. Maybe I’m already being super mean. I don’t know. I just don’t care.  I know that’s wrong. But I still don’t care.
